Private sellers: what you actually pay

Nothing on the sale itself. eBay UK’s page for private sellers states that you will not pay final value fees or regulatory operating fees when your items sell. Costs arise only from listing more than 300 items a month (35p each), optional upgrades such as a £2 subtitle or a reserve price (4% of the reserve, capped at £150, charged whether or not the item sells), and a 3% international fee when the buyer’s delivery address is outside the UK and you do not use eBay International Shipping. Those figures include VAT.

Add the per-order fee (£0.30 for orders of £10 or less, £0.40 above), the 0.35% regulatory operating fee on the total amount of the sale, and the international fee where the buyer is abroad. Shop subscriptions do not change these rates; they change how many listings are free.

Worked example

A business seller sells a £120 pair of trainers with £5 postage to a UK buyer. The item price is £100 or more, so the 7% rate applies to the £125 total: £8.75, plus the £0.40 per-order fee, makes an £9.15 final value fee. The regulatory operating fee is 0.35% of £125, £0.44. Total £9.59 excluding VAT; the seller receives £115.41. A private seller making the same sale pays £0.

Notes on the data

  • Business fees are shown excluding VAT, as on eBay's page; private-seller figures include VAT.
  • Shop subscriptions (Basic £27, Featured £77, Anchor £437 a month) change listing allowances, not the category rates.
  • The buyer protection fee eBay charges buyers on private-seller purchases is not on these pages and is not modelled.

Questions sellers ask

Do private sellers pay eBay fees in the UK?
No final value fee and no regulatory operating fee for UK-registered private sellers, per eBay UK's fee page updated 5 November 2026. You pay only if you list more than 300 items a month (35p per extra listing), add optional upgrades, or deliver to a buyer outside the UK (3% international fee). Motors is excluded from the 0% rule.
What do business sellers pay?
A final value fee at the category rate on the total amount of the sale (item, postage and taxes), a per-order fee of £0.30 for orders of £10 or less and £0.40 above, and a 0.35% regulatory operating fee on the total amount of the sale, all excluding VAT. International sales add 1.05% for the Eurozone and Northern Europe, 1.8% for the US and Canada or 2% elsewhere.
What are the main business category rates?
10.9% for antiques, collectables, toys, sporting goods and similar; 9.9% for books, films, music, cameras, computers, phones and video games; 11.9% for clothing; 12.9% for crafts, pet supplies and everything else; 6.9% up to £1,000 then 3% for tech devices such as laptops, phones and televisions; 14.9% up to £1,000 then 4% for jewellery. The dropdown lists every group on eBay's page.
How do trainers work?
11.9% normally, but 7% when the item price excluding postage is £100 or more; the per-order fee still applies. Trainers sold through Authenticity Guarantee with the free postage label pay no final value fee on postage.
Is there a Top-rated discount?
Yes for business sellers: 10% off the variable part of the final value fee on Premium Service listings, not on the per-order fee.
What is the currency conversion charge?
2.5% of the amount converted when eBay converts your funds; it rises to 2.75% from 1 December 2026.
